Golnar Shahyar is an Iranian/Canadian vocalist, composer, and multi-instrumentalist based in Vienna and Berlin. Her specialty is to combine different music styles and cultures so natural and effortless that one hardly notices the complexity of her compositions and singing. Her hypnotic performances create an atmosphere where authenticity, vulnerability, and empathy are celebrated as strengths. Born and raised in Iran, she moved to Canada in 2001 and after finishing her studies in Biology in Toronto, she moved to Vienna in 2008 to become a musician. Her international career took off quickly while finishing her vocal studies at the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna. Since then she has produced many CDs, performed in many festivals and venues, and collaborate with many renowned musicians worldwide. Besides being a bandleader, she is also an advocate for EDI (Equity, Diversity, Inclusion) spaces as well as fair pay in the independent Austrian Music scene. She is the co-founder of WE:Shape and has worked as a curator in various festivals and events in Vienna to help implement EDI in the curating processes. Being for more than a decade in music, performance, and education, Golnar Shahyar is considered to be a multifaceted musician who has put quality, dialog, personal expression, storytelling, and social advocacy at the core of her artistic work.
